YouthWorks PH is an initiative in partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) that aims to improve life skills and increase employment prospects of underprivileged Filipino youth. Held at McDonald’s Sucat San Antonio in Parañaque City, the graduation marks a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to youth development and employability in the country.

A total of 53 youth trainees have completed their month-long training program.

A total of 53 youth trainees have completed their month-long training program on food and beverage services, leadership, communication, and critical thinking skills. They are now deployed across 35 McDonald’s stores in nine Metro Manila cities for their paid training. McDonald’s Philippines has committed to train up to 5,000 YouthWorks PH trainees by 2026.

“At McDonald’s, we believe that when people are given opportunities to grow, they will succeed. We are very thankful for programs like YouthWorks PH, and partners like USAID and PBEd, who are equally committed in training and upskilling the Filipino youth. Through this partnership, we look forward to welcoming more new trainees in our restaurants nationwide, helping them to develop to become productive members of society and to be their Best Me,” McDonald’s Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer Kenneth S. “Since we started our operations more than 43 years ago, Dr. George T. Yang committed to providing employment opportunities to students. He saw that there was an opportunity to support these students by giving them the flexibility to earn while studying. At McDonald’s, we are committed to using our scale to provide equal opportunities for all whether through employment generation or through our training and development programs,” McDonald’s Philippines Managing Director Margot Torres said.

“Today, with more than 760 stores nationwide, McDonald’s Philippines employs over 60,000 individuals—with more than half comprising of regular part-time working students. As a big employment generator for the youth, we have a responsibility to equip them with lifelong skills and, the right values that will help them succeed in the future,” added Torres.

Established in 2019, the partnership between USAID and PBEd for YouthWorks PH is one of McDonald’s Philippines’ initiatives that aim to champion youth employability together with the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES)– a partnership with the DOLE, which offers students summer jobs to help finance their education while gaining work experience. McDonald’s also supports working students by giving them flexible working schedules. To date, the partnership has helped 16,000 beneficiaries nationwide. McDonald’s Philippines is also known for its inclusive hiring practices, employing qualified out-of-school youth, senior citizens, and the disabled–regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, to inspire them to become the best version of themselves.

The year 2020 was poised to be a landmark for Four Legged Tiles with its planned debut at the prestigious Philippine International Furniture Show at the SMX Convention Center. However, like a sudden storm, the pandemic arrived, altering plans for industries and individuals alike.

Despite the event’s cancellation just days before its commencement, Luca’s enthusiasm remained undiminished. He had meticulously prepared a series of new, innovative collections featuring handcrafted, hand-carved, and hand-painted wooden tiles destined to transform any space into a work of art.

“The pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns seemed gloomy for the business, but it challenged our creativity and resilience. It was a call to adapt and innovate.” Maestro Luca recalls.

Embracing the challenge, Vezzaro swiftly pivoted to digital platforms to showcase his new creations, believing in the resilience and appeal of his products. This strategic shift not only sustained the business but surprisingly boosted sales during the initial lockdown months. Luca’s foresight in maintaining a substantial inventory of raw materials enabled the team to fulfill new orders seamlessly once operations resumed.

The dedication to his craft and his team was evident as he ensured the well-being of his in-house carpenters, who stayed at the company’s accommodation during the lockdown. They were not only compensated but were also cared for, receiving essentials and means to stay connected with their families.

As the pandemic persisted, Four Legged Tiles adapted to the new normal, replacing physical client interactions with digital engagements. Luca observed how adeptly Filipinos navigated this shift, leveraging social media to engage with brands like never before.

“The unique ability of Filipinos in adapting to new circumstances is truly inspiring,” he notes.

The extended time at home has also shifted consumer behavior, with more people investing in enhancing their personal spaces. Luca’s insights into these changes have spurred him to continuously innovate, ensuring his creations meet the evolving desires of homeowners. “If their home is their sanctuary, our mission is to make it visually stunning,” Vezzaro asserts.

With a profound belief in his mission and a love for his craft, Luca maintains, “Believing strongly in what you do and loving your work unconditionally, assures you of success. In fact, I believe that Four Legged Tiles has elevated wood craftsmanship to a whole new level.”

Elevating Craftsmanship

At the heart of Four Legged Tiles’ enterprise is world class quality kiln-dried wood. The FSC-certified wood undergoes a kiln-drying process to enhance its durability. While Vezzaro’s forebears specialized in traditional furniture, he has expanded the scope of their craftsmanship by experimenting with various unique and innovative finishes and materials.

Maestro Luca elaborates on his unique approach in crafting various designs in his projects. He revealed that not all techniques are the same.

“Our tiles are adorned with accents of melted metal gildings, mother-of-pearl, engraving, glazing, distressed finishes, and designs that mimic gemstones, just to name a few. Each tile is meticulously crafted by hand, ensuring no two pieces are identical,” Vezzaro said.

He is supported by a team of more than 15 well-trained Filipino artisans.

Four-Legged Tiles specializes in producing an array of decorative items including wall décor, wall cladding, sculptures, statement doors, and accent furniture for both private and commercial clientele.

“We cater to clients seeking exclusivity and uniqueness,” Vezzaro notes, sharing an anecdote of a widow who commissioned a seashell-shaped wall décor in memory of her late husband, a Shell executive.

The company also offers custom mosaic tiles, meticulously hand-painted and assembled to create personalized images, including photorealistic mosaics.

One of Vezzaro’s most ambitious projects involved creating an 80-square-meter accent wall for the Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Tugbo, Masbate City, featuring over 90,000 handmade and hand-painted tiles.

For a client in Baguio, Vezzaro crafted an 8-meter wall decoration inspired by the Kalinga tapis, incorporating wooden shells, each intricately made by hand to achieve a unique aesthetic effect complemented by hanging Capiz shells that produce melodious sounds in the breeze.

Mixing Both Italian and Filipino Innovation and Dedication

Maestro Luca narrates that in 2017, he established the company by drawing upon his extensive background in various artistic and manufacturing disciplines spanning over three decades.

Vezzaro’s journey began in 1994 when he moved to the Philippines, following an invitation from a German client. What was intended to be a brief visit transformed into the inception of a business that initially focused on handmade paper products for major retailers in Europe and the United States, including Walmart and Costco.

“I am an Italian with a Filipino heart, proud to have introduced a novel product that was non-existent six years ago,” states the 60-year-old artisan.

In 2017, Maestro Luca returned to his first love, woodworking, and established Four-Legged Tiles, concentrating on furniture accented with wooden tiles. As demand for decorative surfaces grew, he shifted focus to wall décor, setting up a 2,209-square meter manufacturing facility in San Pedro, Laguna.

Today, the business primarily serves the local Philippine market, attracting clients willing to invest in the elegance and uniqueness of their products.

Nurturing a love for culinary heritage among Filipino youth through food stories

The Mama Sita Foundation, which birthed the MKP initiative, also put more effort in promoting the contest in local and international schools. This is in line with the Foundation’s vision of inspiring Filipino youth to develop an appreciation for Philippine culinary heritage through the telling and retelling of stories centered on food. 

More than half of last year’s entries came from high school students in the Philippines and abroad.         In appreciation of the support from schools that actively promoted the MKP 2023 contest to their student bodies, the Foundation gave away cash prizes and plaques to Timoteo Paez Integrated High School in Tondo, Manila and the International Philippine School in Jeddah KSA for submitting the most number of entries among the participating schools.

Pamaskong Pagkaing Pilipino 2023 winners 

The third prize was awarded to Joey Rodrigo for his essay entitled “Sumang Pasko ng Bulakan (Bayanihan sa Kapaskuhan)”. The essay, written in crisp and vibrant Filipino, is a wonderful tribute to the solidarity of the townsfolk in Bulakan who get together in the early morning of Christmas Eve to prepare Sumang Pasko, a delicacy made of glutinous rice and purple yam sauce. The tradition of making this delicacy, which spans generations, is a testament to the strong community spirit in Bulakan, as well as their commitment to preserve their town’s culinary heritage. Joey is currently the Executive Secretary of the Dangal ng Bulacan Foundation, Inc. a group dedicated to preserving Bulacan’s cultural heritage. He has been winning essay-writing contests since he was a student, and has appeared in TV, radio, and online programs as a resource person on Bulacan’s history and cultural heritage.

The second prize went to Mark Caranzo for his essay, “An Asthmatic’s Idea of a Feast”. Written in flawless English, Mark makes a case for the Filipino trait of inclusivity through the lens of his own unique experience as an asthmatic person with a limited capacity for gastronomic adventure. In turns humorous and introspective, Mark’s story also speaks of a mother’s steadfast and ardent love, personified in an unnamed dish – chunks of beef seasoned with readily available condiments – something that his mother always had on standby, and could whip up in a flash, in case there is nothing else on the potluck laden table fit for his consumption. Mark is currently a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholar at the University of the Philippines, Diliman taking up Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. On the side, he is a campus journalist and a content creator.

Taking the plum award is Reynadel Cayetano for her piece “Pochero ng Aking Kabataan”. Written in beautiful and lyrical Filipino, Reynadel’s essay features touching glimpses of childhood nostalgia, strong familial bonds and the role food plays in creating these, and snippets of historical trivia, effectively utilizing all these elements to frame her main subject – her mother’s delicious Pochero, the recipe of which, she generously shares. Reynadel, or Edel for short, is a writer for multimedia platforms. In 2022, she won the top prize at the 21st Doreen Gamboa Food Writing Awards for her essay on Philippine Ube.

The three winning entries were selected by representatives of the Mama Sita Foundation using the following criteria: 40% Cultural Significance – or the entry’s ability to convey a cultural element in Philippine Christmas celebrations or holiday traditions built around Philippine cuisine; 20% Narrative Effectiveness which evaluates the entry’s storytelling in terms of clarity and pace; 20% Theme Relevance which looks for strong alignment with the initiative’s overall theme of uniting people through Filipino food; and the remaining 20% for Creativity and Originality which refers to the entry’s uniqueness in storytelling approach, style, and technique. All the winners received cash prizes and Mama Sita’s gift packs.

More than a decade of Filipino food stories

Now on its 13^th year, MKP remains committed to promoting Philippine cuisine, especially among the youth whose preferences and tastes are being shaped by a myriad of forces on the digital realm and beyond, and in diasporic communities where there is a stronger clamor to understand cultural roots and identity through food, and its origin stories. 

Through stories built around cherished family recipes, hometown culinary traditions, regional food folklore, and locally grown ingredients, MKP aims to celebrates the uniqueness of Filipino food and offer it as a worthy contender among the world’s best cuisines.

The agency started the training on February 18 to tackle blended learning frameworks, teaching and learning with television, use of advanced Microsoft productivity tools, and learning accelerators, among others.

DCP packages consisting of laptops, charging carts, smart TVs, hard disk drives, and routers are now being distributed to beneficiary schools. 

Spearheaded by the Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS), the NTOT gathered approximately 700 DepEd Regional and Schools Division Offices personnel who will serve as trainers, facilitators, and/or program managers of the DCP Adoption Program. The training utilizes blended learning through massive open online courses that combine face-to-face and technology-mediated sessions.

The participants develop action plans for the rollout and implementation of learned concepts among DCP recipient schools to aid teaching, learning, and other services.

“Your presence is instrumental as you will assist us in capacitating our teachers with the necessary skills to maximize the utilization of our DCP packages. Let’s leave a legacy of empowered learners and transformed education,” Undersecretary for Administration Nolasco Mempin noted.

Meanwhile, ICTS Director Ferdinand Pitagan discussed the background and rationale of the initiative and highlighted that the DCP packages must be promoted and utilized effectively to address the needs of the MATATAG curriculum.

“You are asked to replicate what we have started so that our educators will be able to design, conduct, and assess blended learning to ensure the acquisition of heightened learning of our learners,” Director Pitagan said.

DCP NTOT completers shall receive certificates from DepEd and Microsoft. This is conducted in coordination with DepEd’s NEAP, Bureau of Human Resources and Organizational Development (BHROD), Bureau of Learning Delivery (BLD), Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD), Microsoft Philippines, Audentes Technologies, and Line Learning and Development Solutions.
